Matthew R. Picerno, Ph.D. earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from George Mason University in 2001. He completed his internship training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD in 2001, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Children's Hospital Boston in 2005. Dr. Picerno provides psychological evaluation and psychotherapy services to children, adolescents, and adults, in individual, marital, and family treatment modalities.

Dr. Picerno most frequently approaches psychotherapy from a cognitive behavioral perspective, focusing on the way in which maladaptive thoughts adversely influence emotional states, and often incorporates solution-focused work into treatment, uncovering the obstacles that serve as constant stumbling blocks in the lives of his clients. Depending upon circumstances, his therapeutic interventions also draw from developmental theory, family systems perspectives, and psychodynamic processes. Dr. Picerno provides psychological evaluations to address learning and attention difficulties, as well as emotional concerns, behavioral dysregulation issues, and thought difficulties.

Prior to joining the practice, Dr. Picerno completed 8 years of service as a clinical psychologist in the United States Navy. During that time, he provided psychotherapeutic and psychological assessment services to active duty service members, reservists, retirees, and families, in settings as diverse as military hospitals and medical treatment centers, base clinics, the Middle East, aboard ship deployed in the Asian Pacific, and the overseas Department of Defense school system. He is currently a member of the American Psychological Association, as well as the Rhode Island Psychological Association.
